Just when you think you know it all….
Stereotypes are bad. Not to mention inaccurate. That’s something to which pretty much anyone will agree. Sure, it’s natural for any animal (including people!) to try to notice patterns and tuck them neatly into easier-to-remember-and-understand bite-sized snippets. But we ALL know that the world isn’t that simple. People aren’t that simple. And surely, the caricatures that emerge from all that pigeon-holing are terribly over-simplified…and not particularly helpful.
So here’s the reason we need a Mindset Makeover. Not too long ago, it was perfectly acceptable — not to mention medically-confirmed — to view people with darker skin as “less than,” as genetically inferior. Turns out, it’s just larger quantities of melanin. Nothing more. Even more recently, being gay was a diagnosable mental illness. Turns out, that’s just a difference in neurological wiring. Nothing more.
Well, guess what? The same is true for us. Being “on the spectrum” is a variation on a theme. A difference in neurology. Not a marker of inferiority. Not an illness. Not abnormal. Just less typical. And when you understand that….a super-big shift begins to take place. We call that: The Asperkids Mindset Makeover.
