…what most often gets in the way of discovering our own, true, adult selves seems to be a matter of shame — which really, really means that it’s a matter of fear. Fear of being less, excluded….rejectable, weird….other. The thing of it is…those of us who are on the spectrum have usually spent a lifetime feelings those awful things anyway, because we’ve been comparing ourselves to a genetic “neutral” that may be more typical, but in no way is more normal. The shame comes only from the fruitless effort of pretending to be something you are not. Nor are you meant to be.
